Ralph Metzner and Timothy Leary in front of the Millbrook Estate, the “psychedelic central of the East Coast.” 

The beautiful Milbrook Estate was the official headquarters of International Federation and Internal Freedom (IFIF). IFIF was founded by Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert under the belief that everyone should be able to find “Internal Freedom” through the use of mind expanding drugs such as psilocybin and LSD. The Millbrook Estate was a 64 room manor situated on 4,000 acres. Here, IFIF met and tripped together on the beautiful green landscape surrounded by fountains, tennis courts, goats, cats, and dogs. They engaged in LSD sessions led by one of the members in which they would try to transcend themselves and “break through to the other side”. After their “games” they would sit together and discuss the effects that LSD had on their psyche. 

Members of IFIF/visitors of the Millbrook Estate, which later became the Castalia Foundation (named after Herman Hesse’s The Glass Bead Game),  included Alan Watts. Paul Krassner, and Allen Ginsberg.
